about.
Mary Catherine Starr is a vinyasa yoga teacher, Studio Director, blogger, and oil painter living and working
in Arlington, VA and Washington, DC. When she is not working, practicing, or teaching
yoga, she can be found painting in her studio, eating apples, attempting to CrossFit, or spending time with her new husband, Ben.
Mary Catherine is originally from the suburbs of Atlanta, GA, where she was first introduced to yoga in High School but complained that it was “too slow for her,” and instead opted to run, play sports, and workout at the gym. After graduating from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, Mary Catherine moved to New York City, where she was reacquainted with yoga while searching for a new physical activity after suffering a hip and back injury caused by running. When she ventured out in search of something that would not aggravate her injuries, Mary Catherine discovered yoga at her neighborhood gym in the East Village (shout-out to Dolphin Fitness!). Once she began practicing regularly, Mary Catherine continued practicing yoga anywhere that she could—including the “living area” of her 200 square-foot studio apartment. When the time came to move to Washington, DC, Mary Catherine took some time to mourn her East Village life and neighborhood yoga haven, and then began researching yoga studios in DC. It was through this research that Mary Catherine found Tranquil Space, where she completed her Level 1 Certification in October, 2009, her Level 2 Certification in May, 2010, and her 500-hr Advanced Teacher Training in November, 2012. Mary Catherine is now a yoga teacher, Studio Director, and a part of the Teacher Training staff at Tranquil Space (TS). TS has played a very significant role in Mary Catherine’s journey as a Yogi, as the studio has already taught her so much about yoga, community, and self-study in the 3 years that she has been a student, teacher, and manager there. As she continues to grow in her teaching (+ life!) journey, Mary Catherine hopes that you will join her... Namaste! |

the yoga.
Mary Catherine teaches Vinyasa Yoga with a
strong focus on linking the breath with movement as the class flows
from one pose to another. Her teaching style has been described as
sunny,
encouraging, and inclusive, and she strives to encourage her students to
truly listen to their bodies while practicing, as she believes that the
modern-day individual tends to ignore his or her body until it screams
out for attention. Mary Catherine’s classes have a positive,
upbeat tempo, while making room for students to come into their bodies
and connect with how they are feeling in the present moment. She uses a
wide range of musical artists and genres to guide the class tempo
through her sequencing, and encourages her students to take the class to
whatever level feels comfortable for them, while still pushing their
individual edge.
